This video doesn’t tell the whole story, so I did a graphical top down illustration of size.
The JLU (by far the most popular wrangler) is literally twice as big, and heavy as its CJ forefathers
cj-2a footprint - 50.6 square feet
JLU footprint - 96.6 square feet
Cj-2a weight - 2,140 lbs
JLU weight - 4,440 lbs
I realize you get a lot more Jeep and that its a much better overall vehicle, but I think its lost some of the spunk the old jeeps had on account of their plucky size. The main thing that strikes me when I see the new ones is the width. The track width is enormous compared to the old ones.
This is just a small(er) Jeep appreciation thread.

It’s too bad that the Roxor isn’t street legal. I like the idea of its simplicity combined with not being old and rusty like most used Jeeps in PA.

TJ = perfect balance of modern and old.

Isn’t it street legal in some ways? I know in a lot of rural areas you can plate ATVs and stuff as long as they are kept to rural roads.
If I lived in the middle of nowhere and was like... a teacher at a nearby school or something. I would 10/10 drive one.

I still like small J eeps

Yup.

You can’t, as of right now, do that with the roxor

Some US states and I’d imagine Canadian provinces allow you to plate ATVs as long as they meet certain standards for lights and whatnot, so in those places yes.

Small Jeep you say?

What? Why can’t anything good in this world exist?

smol joop is best joop

I know for a fact that Alberta allows it. I’ve ridden plated ATV’s there. I would assume other provinces allow it or are so unpopulated that nobody cares.

I really want one of these, and that’s even one of my top choice for colors.

There is nowhere in my part of the world (Pennsylvania) that let s you plate ATVs. Maybe in Akaska, but nowhere on the east coast. So it’s not of much use to me. A shame, since I think that they are nifty. I saw one this summer at a display in town.

Yellow is such a classic Jeep color.

Thanks for making the YJ font and size comparison yellow

You can still get a small Jeep in the form of the Compass and Renegade!

You have to wonder how many Roxors are going to get illegal vin swaps from basket case CJ 2s

The best small Jeep

Not necessarily a Joop thing, but I m ourn the enbiggenation of all vehicles. Small cars can be excellent too. I dunno why everything has to be enormous.

I think they refused to sell the kits and certifications to appease Jeep and placate them from suing. Fat lot of good that did them. I hope Jeep gets their ass handed to them though and Mahindra counter sues. Just because.

about XJ sized...on the outside, not for heart size.

I really like the TJ, I think its the perfect wrangler. Not to small, I mean SMALL but not unlivable. 4.0 I6 with reliable injection, coil springs, good aftermarket. Durable (crap) interiors, minimal electronics to break. Good little things. This one in the picture was the 2.5 5 speed without any traction adders at all and it follow a lifted Taco, Frontier and my cruiser through some pretty hairy terrain.
![]() 10/19/2018 at 16:33 |

yup. 97 cruiser = size of 2017 4runner.

Move to WV, nobody cares about
side-by-sides being driven
on the street there.

I enjoy driving through WV, but I don't like the Roxor enough to move.

Even the current 2-door Wrangler is over a foot longer than the YJ.
I believe it is still the smallest non-FWD 4-seater you can buy, but, still, the whole idea was to be compact and nimble, like a mountain goat.

When looking for dimension for this I came across an article saying that there is no point in pining for another lj, since the 2 door jl is pretty much the same size.
![]() 10/19/2018 at 19:35 |

I think the JK 2-door is something like 6 inches shorter than the old TJ Unlimited, but they’re within about an inch of each other in wheelbase, interior room has to be about the same.

Yep, for off reading the 4 banger is fine. Hwy driving is another story.

love the renegade. Yes, it falls short of a replica mini wrangler, but you can get it in a stick, 4x4, and theres plenty of aftermarket inventory to build your ORV.

I particularly fond of what I like to call “Little wheel Wranglers”.
It just makes it look extra small with the tires tucked in.
![]() 10/19/2018 at 23:24 |

There’s certainly and honesty about it as well. And truthfully you really didn't need huge tires on those older Jeeps. They got anywhere they needed to go on 31s

The cargo space is vastly different, even if they’re close in size. A usable 23.4 cu ft in the LJ, vs 12.9 for a JL 2 door. That’s the diffence between my son’s hockey crap fitting behind a seat and not.
That said, my preference in future Jeep ownership would be LJ, then whatever variant of a two door I can find at the right price. LJ will mostly likely exceed my “fun”budget.
